I am a novice builder so forgive me if this is too simple a question… I need to adjust my iron build to D8 weight.. should I do this before assemble? I assume I will cut shaft to length , add weight to tip, dry fit and weigh…but I will not have the grip installed… I am concerned without the grip installed I will not get the proper swing weight measurement.. any guidance is appreciated! Thank you
Get an extra grip of the same type you wish to use and slice it (split) along its length so you can place on the club for dry fit. Tape would add some weight but the will likely be negated by the weight of a ferule and epoxy. With a little practice you can get close this way. Otherwise you are dealing with lead tape on the club head or using a rod to push weight down the shaft.
You do have to account for the grip, and the suggestions given of using a split grip or of laying the grip on the end of the shaft will work, giving you an idea of what he final assembled swing weight will be. Obviously the split group used will need to be the same weight as the grip you are going to install to give you an accurate estimate. If you choose to lay the actual grip on top of the shaft while measuring the club in a swingweight scale, you can add a piece of tape to secure it and keep it from falling off.
