Which of your irons has the thinest face? or the highest COR?

shanksaplenty, first off, you really need to change this name of yours. This is the un mentionable word. I have never had the reallly bad shanks, however, every once in a while (one or two per season) I will shank a sand wedge in a sand trap. Scary thing those shanks.

Feel, encompasses a large area. In the scenario you posed in your question, you would probably have a different feel if each iron generated any difference in sound at impact. Sound is one of the bigger parts to feel. Also, if the COR at impact with the ball increased or decreased between the two irons, you could possibly get a feel difference in your hands. The only way to find out would be to build two irons as you described and give it a try.

So, my best guess (I have never tested this) would be that usually you would not be able to tell the difference unless the face thickness was substantially different.

    Mr. Maltby,

In your recent pamphlet “How Golf Clubs Work…” (p. 45), you address the issue of “feel.” I’m curious as to whether iron face thickness affects feel at all.

For example, if I were to build two identical cavity back 5-irons (same length, shaft, frequency, weight, both registering the same on the MPF scale, etc.), but one had a “thicker” face than the other, would I notice any difference in feel?
