Stiff Tip or Not

marktheblake, always keep in mind, its how you hit the ball that really counts in the end. “Analysis” is good, but when something works stay with it until your needs change again. I like to work from club category to club category, one at a time. The categories really stand mostly on their own because of the different way each category hits the ball and its purpose in our game. The five categories are; drivers, fairway metals and hybrids, irons, wedges and the putter. Simplistic I know, but the best way to look at things.

One thing I suffer from is “paralysis by analysis” , your website, this forum, the golfworks catalog, and the internet will be the death of me. You probably wouldn’t believe how much thought i put into this. I even built a swingweight calculation spreadsheet so i could see what happens if I change one of the factors.

Last night I purchased the MPC heads plus FST 115 stepless shafts. I felt i would be more comfortable the slight increase in offset they have over the MTF, as I might one day pick up the MMBs in the short irons, and the MPC match up better.

I got some extra shafts so i can experiment with lengths and maybe soft/hard stepping with a 6 iron to start with.well Thanks for help so far. I was going to buy 2 drivers as well but i thought thats too much to deal with at the moment :-)

Thanks, i was only looking at the catalogue, which still lists the COG for the 6i as does the MPF chart .

In fact the figures on the MPF chart are weird. It says its a 6 iron, but the weight and loft are more like 5.5 iron

The Golfworks website has the 5 iron details for all the iron heads. It lists “COG”, which is the actual COG. For the MPC it’s 17.71mm. This is higher than the MTF and lower than the MMB.

I really wish the detailed playability ratings wouldn’t mix 5 and 6 irons!

    Thanks everyone

Ralph, I made a typo- i meant to say I am (or was depending on moon position) considering the MPC (not MCC) or the MTF

but its hard to compare the specs of the MPC with other heads as you used a 6 iron to calculate the MPF. What would the Actual VCOG be in the MPC 5iron?

FYI, the standard FST 115 has a flex profile that’s stiffer through the top part of the shaft and softer in the tip vs the Pro 115. This is the case with the 125 and Pro 125 as well.

If you’re looking for a 115g shaft that’s “stable” through the top, but has some kick in the tip, the standard FST 115 could be your answer. BTW, the micro steps look very good on these…...much less pronounced than the steps on True Temper steel.

marktheblake, the MTF still has a lower center of gravity vertically. Both are great looking heads, play about the same but with a few minor differences and as you know I always favor the MTF personally. Probably because it has been around for such a long time.

Thanks Ralph, in regard to VCOG, I am considering the MCC or MTF heads. Whilst the MTF is in that range you recommend, the MCC is .748 however that is measured with a 6 iron not 5 iron like the rest, so not easy to compare directly?

Word – I am guessing you have not subscribed to Golfworks emails. might be a good idea, it ends sunday

Hi- What is the sale on heads you are referring to?

marktheblake, the FST115 seems like a good starting point for you to move down to a medium flex tip. This should help a little with the feel of thin shots and using an apples to apples comparison, you should get a little higher launch angle, but not a lot.

From what you are saying and particularly in the “sometimes thin hits” if you miss it, I would search out lower vertical center of gravity irons to help with this. Couple a low CG with a medium tip flex along with your higher swing speed and you may miss fewer shots or at the very least, make your shots feel more solid more often. In your case, I am thinking (read as guessing) that a vertical CG between .650 and .700 may work well for you. Let me know if you try this and how it works out.
