A 7-iron weights some 270-275 g so adding 10% more weight 1-1.5” to the heel and above the face will move the COG 5% towards the place you put the weight. If it is 2” to the heel and 1,5” above the COG, you will move the COG 0.1” or 2,5mm towards the heel and the COG 0.08” or 2mm higher. You will basically reduce the MPF with approx 180 points…

Thanks, Ralph. What I was more wondering about was how the weight in the hosel would affect the playability of the club. What would happen if I put 20-30 g of weight in the hosel?

word, a heavier shaft is not the same as putting weight in the hosel. The weight in the hosel is head weight, the heavier shaft has all its weight distributed throughout the length of the shaft, so it is shaft weight.

I’ve used dynamic gold shafts in irons that were only 1/2 inch shorter than standard (37.5 inch 5 iron) and they were still too light with the heavier shafts. Other than a few grams of weight in the hosel, lead tape may be your only option in some cases. I know that’s not what you want to hear, but hey, many a tour pro has lead tape stuck to one or more of their clubs, and it doesn’t bother them a bit. The bottom line is, form must follow function. Lead tape may not look very appealing, but if it helps you to hit the ball better, so be it.

Sonoma- Would a heavier shaft yield the same result as putting more weight in the hozel?

Ralph- If someone needs to go very short (in length) with their irons, is lead tape the only way to make up the weight? I know you said about 4 grams of weight in the hozel won’t affect playability, but that isn’t very much weight. Are there any options other than tape? Thanks.
