What is the basis for a counter balanced wood shafts? Are they weighted and manufactured different than stock shafts?
Counter balanced shafts have more weight toward the butt end of the shaft, producing a higher balance point. The theory is with a counter balanced shaft, you can use a heavier head but still produce faster swing speeds. More mass moving faster increases distance. We are not talking about massive amounts of weight shift, but usually no more than 10 grams. So if a driver head weight is usually 198-200 grams, with some counter balanced shafts you could use a head that is say 208-210 grams, and the swing weight and/or head feel would not be or feel heavy. Some people like it, others do not and still others can’t really tell the difference.
