1. I’m currently playing AP1 714 irons, but am considering going forged (hit a friend’s forged irons and LOVED the feel) and have heard great things about Maltby irons. I’m an “OK” ball striker. Handicap 15. How does the forgiveness on say the TS2 compare to the AP1s? My miss tends to be more toe than anything. Would another of the Maltby clubs be a better choice than the TS2 for my skill level?

I don’t mind the AP1s, but would like a little more feedback from the clubface when it comes to mishits. Having two gap wedges in the AP1 set is also causing gap issues on the other end of my bag, so I’d prefer a more traditional set with just the one gap wedge so I can fit in another fairway wood or hybrid.

2. If I were to order say a 7 iron to try it out and see how I like it, if I then decided to go ahead and buy a full set would I need to buy a complete set (including another 7 iron) or do you have some kind of deal in place where I wouldn’t have to pay for another 7 iron?

The AP1 714 irons, and subsequent 716 and 718 have been some of the most playable irons that Titliest has ever produced. I wouldn’t get caught up in the idea that just because an iron is “forged” that it means it will automatically feel better than an iron that is not forged. Forging is a process and has nothing to do with the feel of an iron, or wedge. True, most forged irons are made of variations of carbon steel, which generally have a softer hardness rating, but you can heat treat all kinds of materials to give them similar hardness characteristics. We can heat treat a 431 investment cast stainless steel iron in such a way to give it a softer feel. That being said, the largest part of creating a solid feeling, soft feeling iron is in how it’s mass and dimensional characteristics are in the design. We feel we have the best of both when we design our forged, carbon steel irons with high playability. The TS2 is rated slightly lower on the playability scale than the AP1 714’s, but both are in the Super Game Improvement category. The TS2 is an awesome, iron with great feel and might be worth trying. From what your describing, however, I think the PTM forging might be the one you want to try. We designed it to have a little larger profile, but be traditionally shaped. It is also in the Super Game Improvement category, and comes in at a higher number than the AP1 714’s or the TS2. You can order just a #7 and if you like it order the remainder of the set, no problem.
