You can trim it less than the trimming calls for for the R flex. If you start with a 1/2″ trim on the 4 instead of the 3 iron, it will play softer than the standard R. I haven’t run the numbers to know exactly how much softer it will play, but rule of thumb is 1/2 less would give you a 1/4 flex softer. L” less would get you 1/2 flex softer. If you trimmed nothing from the tips of the 3,4,5 irons and started with 1/2″ on a 6 iron, you would be 1 1/2″ less on the tip trim on the 6 thru W, which would get you close to a full flex. However, if you do have the 3,4 and 5 irons and you trimmed nothing from the tip on those, the 3 would be stiffer than the 4 and the 4 stiffer than the 5 due to the head weight differences. So, you can get to a softer flex than the traditional R, but it kind of depends on the set make up as to how much softer you can get, depending on what iron number you start at.
