I’m in the market for some new irons, I’ve been playing some hand me down Spalding’s that are older than me. After a ton of research I’ve decided to go with a new set of Maltby’s, but I’m struggling to pull the trigger on a specific set. I’m a pretty high handicap and usually shoot around mid 90’s, but have progressively been getting better. I usually hit my 7 iron about 140-145 yards for reference. I’m looking for some irons that will be forgiving and help improve my game, but I also don’t want to “grow out” of them quickly.

I’ve been looking at the TE+V4, KE4 Max, and TS3.5. Any input on which of these might suit me best would be greatly appreciated. Or other suggestions if there’s a model that I’m overlooking.

Right off the bat I would suggest the KE4 Max, very forgiving. All of the clubs you mentioned are at least game improvement, so all could be good options, the Max’s are just a little higher in the forgiveness category.

The KE4 Max is our most forgiving (Ultra Game Improvement) and would be a good choice for where you are now. Not sure about growing out of any particular kind of design if it works, and continues to work as you improve, but I understand the idea or feeling. The TS3.5 or the TS3 would be great choices for now and as you progress. They are both Super Game Improvement designs. The TS3.5 has a little stronger lofts, slightly wider sole and slightly more offset. The lofts of the TS3.5 are similar to the KE4 MAX. the profiles, or the look at address, are similar. The TE+V4 is a little more of a players cavity look, a more traditional look and is still a Super Game Improvement iron, so if you like a traditional blade look, it would be the one. It has similar lofts to the TS3, so not as strong as the MAX or the TS3.5.

You can’t really make a bad choice. If I had to narrow it down for you, for where you are now in your game, I might say TS3 or TS3.5. If you want the benefits to distance stronger lofts give you, the TS3.5. If you just want forgiveness and more standard lofts (but still strong by historical standards), of if distance is not an issue, then the TS3. Another consideration is launch trajectory. If you need assistance getting the ball up, then the TS3. If you hit it too high, then the TS3.5.

Some things to think about. Like I said, I don’t think you can make a bad decision as far as the playability.
