I made a post last week about being in my off-season and experimenting with PX LZ shafts with my irons (from DG 120 S300) and what to do with wedge shafts. My irons are the (amazing) Maltby TS3’s which I’ve played in my ’23, ’24, and ’25 seasons. I messed with some Ping i530 and i240’s after a lesson last week. Not much difference between i240 and TS3’s. But the i530 was interesting in that it was way easier to keep the flight and spin down. Obviously there’s about 4* difference in loft at the 7 iron between the i530 and i240/TS3.
So, that got me thinking about the TS3.5 irons. Usually those distance irons are geared towards slower swing speeds but I don’t hear much about how they work for higher speed players like myself (115+ driver). The wind is a killer for me and puts me on the struggle bus in tournaments. My TS3 knockdown 8 iron is about 100 feet; regular is around 120-130 feet for 165 yards. So, the idea of being able to have a regular flight around 100 feet is very attractive to me.
I sure would love to hear about pro’s and con’s on the stronger lofted options like TS3.5 for higher speed players. Do you fit these often for these players?
If you go on Youtube and look up Letsplaythrough’s channel, he just released a video gaming the TS3.5’s on a nine hole stretch. He gives really good unbiased reviews on clubs without financial gain so he does not feel pressed to give an above average review. He absolutely loved the TS’3s and did state in the video the big differences as far as how it affected his use comparing the 2. He has done reviews on the entire TS line if that interests you in watching. He will also be releasing a video here shortly on the new Maltby wedge line.
