I have a 2024 Callaway Apex UW that needs a new shaft. I’ve been thinking about putting in a UST PowerCore hybrid shaft in, but it would require either the hosel to be reamed to fit .370, or the shaft sanded down to fit .335. Not gonna lie – the $250 price difference between the hybrid shaft and the wood shaft is definitely a factor in this ponder.

I would much rather ream the hosel than risk the structural integrity of the shaft – but will that shave off too much material in the hosel to where it’s just going to break from normal use?

I’ve gotten a lot of conflicting responses in my research on this so far, so I figured I’d come to the experts. Thank you.

Although I don’t have one of those UW’s to reference, I can tell you we would not try to ream a hybrid, fairway wood or utility wood from .370 to .335. We would hesitate to do it to a .350. The nature of the wall thickness in those categories of clubs are simply not conducive to reaming out that much. I am sure some have done it, but not something we would take on, and we have all the proper tools, set up and experience to do it.

I also would not sand a shaft down from .370 to .335. We would never sand a graphite shaft down that much, and really do not do it at all. I know some do, but usually it’s a .370 to a .355, and to be honest, that should not be done except with the proper centerless grinder. UST does it to in their Recoil line to turn .370 iron shafts into .355’s, but not sure what others manufacturers do. Always run the risk of compromising the composite material.

My suggestion would be to find another shaft in .335 that would work.

Figured I would ask on something like this before actually taking steps to do it. If GW wouldn’t do it – I’m not going to either.
