A friend hits my New Level gi22 test 7i with Fuji Vista Pro Reg flex extremely well. The gi22 is out of stock. I want to build him a Maltby test club with comparable forgiveness and speed off the club face. Which Maltby head do you recommend I start with?
You don’t necessarily need to go loft for loft or size for size, so I’ll give my thoughts.
STi2 Gen2 – nice larger profile club without being “large” or bulky. More traditional cavity back game improvement iron. Silica gel insert to help with vibration (feel) and noise. Not sure the type of ball flight your buddy has or wants, but these are a bit weaker in lofts so you should get more launch, peak height, and stopping power.
TS3.5 – lots of cool tech in these guys. Forged clubs compared to the cast in the STi2G2. Tungsten weight in each club. 4-8 irons get polymer injection. 9-A get the ceramic to help with sound/feel and CG placement. These will be stronger lofts than the GI22 by 1*.
The STi2G2 will be half the price, but the TS3.5 have way more tech and are one of the newest irons Maltby offers. Just a matter of what you/he are looking for.
I have not measured any of the sub70 irons so nothing to compare from and actual measurement standpoint. If you’re trying to match the lofts, then what jbhoover stated would be the ones to compare. Both the ones he listed are Ultra Game Improvement designs. From an overall profile standpoint, you might look at the TS3.5. A more classic profile but one that might have some similar characteristics with regards to construction (although I don’t really know what is in the gi22), you might look at the TS1-IM.

The gi22 7i is 30* as I remember it. The KE4 max 7i is also 30*. And other than the 890m (now 980m) is the longest blade length of the Maltby irons which would be similar to the gi22 blade length. I made a friend and grandson sets of the gi22 and I have a set of KE4 max that I think are the most similar in forgiveness and ball speed off the face to the gi22.
