Hey Britt,

I’m looking at putting some True Temper Dynamic Gold .370″ Steel Iron Shafts in one of the new Maltby club heads. (I haven’t decided which ones I like more, probably a blended set). I can hit an 8 iron to 150 if I hit it hard but I can also get a 7 iron to 150 if I hit it softer (150 is kind of an in between number). In the custom shop there are flex options for R300, S200, and S300 and I was wondering what the difference in feel between these flexes might be. How different is the S200 from the R300 and would I really be able to feel the difference? If you could help me with some additional information in choosing a shaft flex I would really appreciate it!

The difference in the R300 and the S200 is basically a full flex. The S200 is just what it appears, just slightly more flexible than the S300. It would be difficult to tell the difference in the S200 and the S300 for sure, but you should be able to tell the difference in the R300 and the S200. What TT does is sort them by weight and the S200 is just a few grams lighter than the S300, but with tolerances you probably wouldn’t be able to tell much through an entire set anyway. In our data base the sample of the R300 was 2 grams lighter than the S200 and the S200 was 2 grams lighter than the S300, so not much difference. When checking the flex profiles, the R300 is a solid R flex and the S200 is just a few cycles more flexible than the S300, but still in the Stiff range. Basically comes down to how you want he clubs to feel. Based on what your telling me with your distance, you can probably handle the S200, but it will feel firmer. If you are an aggressive swinger or have a quick tempo, I might lean towards the S200. However, if you have a smoother rhythm and a more moderate transition, and you like a less firm feel, I would go with the R300. Dynamic Gold is a low trajectory shaft in all the flexes and in all the weights, until you get to the 105″ or the new 95″s. So depending on our trajectory needs, keep that in mind.
