I’m debating between building a set of DBM irons vs. a set of KE4 Max. I built a Max #7 iron, and have tried two different shafts in it, but have yet to experience the “Wow” factor. So I have 3 questions:

Could it be that the lower bottom of bore to ground measurement has made the shaft play too stiff, and should I install a shaft that is soft-stepped?

Also, assuming I’m comparing heads of the same loft (the KE4 Max 7 iron vs. the DBM 6 iron…..both 30 degrees) will one be easier to hit than the other?

Finally, will the height of the shot….and perhaps the distance….be the same for each 30 degree club?

A lot of factors to consider and in the end only your experience with each will determine what is best. They are not similar designs, obviously. MAX is an Ultra Game Improvement design and should be more forgiving, even tough the DBM is very forgiving as well (Super Game Improvement category). In theory a slight variance in the bottom of the bore to heel might make a difference, but I doubt it would be noticeable to the majority of players. As far as the distance, I have to assume you made the MAX to #7 iron length and the DBM to a #6 iron length. That alone should yield more distance from the DBM #6 iron even though they have the same lofts. If you made them the same length, 6 iron length for instance, then the MAX iron would be heavier because the head weight is heavier for a #7 iron than a #6 iron, so that could effect how it performs in comparison. Visa Versa is also true. So, not sure if that helps your evaluation any, but that’s what I see. Let me know how it turns out, what you decide. Always interested in the process someone takes to determine the best club for them.
