Hello. I am new to the forum and new to Maltby. I am currently a 15HC and game PXG 0211 xcor2s. I am looking for a new iron with less offset, thinner topline, and more workability (without sacrificing much forgiveness or distance LOL). I was considering the Maltby line, specifically drawn to the T3 or TS1m (visually and especially since the TS1m has gotten rave reviews recently). The specs do not look very different on paper from what I can tell (loft, head size). I’m a bit concerned that the TS1M is too much of a “blade” for me to game, but I LOVE the look of it and the MPF looks great. I’m worried the T3 will be as “chunky” topline as my current PXGs and won’t gain me much in distance per club since PXG lofts are so strong – basically won’t be anything quite new or that different from what I have already. I’d appreciate thoughts/experiences with the two clubs in direct comparison and/or compared to PXG 0211s (if anyone has such experience). Much appreciated!

I have both the TS-1IM and TS-3. I had the TS-2 for three years and just sold them. I have a set of TS-1 that I will be selling soon.. LOL

The TS-3 topline will be less than the PXG. I find it quite tasteful. The TS-1 IM… is very much a thin topline. FWIW– I played the TE-forged for quite some time also..

I find the TS-3 to be a fantastic forgiving players cavity.. Truly fantastic.

I will need more time w/ my TS-1 IM to have a fair comparison..

Best of luck- you will not be wrong no matter what your choice is!!

I have both the TS-1IM and TS-3. I had the TS-2 for three years and just sold them. I have a set of TS-1 that I will be selling soon.. LOL

I will chime in on a couple of points. First, don’t be too caught up in the “hot face” idea. the reason irons go farther today is 99.95% due to the stronger lofts. I would never make a choice on an iron because of a promoted hot face. Technology, materials and manufacturing techniques have allowed us to make thinner face irons, but that primarily gives you more mass to distribute elsewhere in the head. If there is any compression of the face it is very minor and can only have a very minor effect o the lower lofted irons. Hardly measurable in my experience. The more loft, the more oblique the hit an the less any kind of face movement can occur.

Second point is that we have multiple models and have designed the lofts to be appropriate for the designs and the trends you see in the industry. some manufacturers have gone extremely strong, in my opinion, and that is fine. Just realize that when you hit company X’s 24 degree 6 iron and you hit our 28 degree six iron, it’s not magic that you hit X’s farther. It’s loft.

A third comment I make often, especially when I hear the term “workability”. Any club can be “worked”. Controlling ball flight is solely reliant on the players technique and the path and face angle at impact. We assume when we discuss this that the ball will be struck properly. Where certain clubs move less is when they are stable designs and they are hit off center. Where some clubs may move more is when they are unstable or less stable designs and they are hit off center. Is the latter case they will also go a shorter distance. So I ask that no club be judged on workability based on its looks or design or old, incorrect assumptions.

I think any combination or selection of our models can work for you and provide you with performance that is as good or better than any other models available. Of course, they should fit you and you give you the look you want, the loft progressions you want, etc. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. The suggestion to by a single #6 or #7 iron in whatever models you want to try is a good way to test and help you make a decision.

I’m a long time gamer of Maltby equipment and trust me you cannot go wrong with any of their latest iron offerings. Not only is the technology cutting edge, but the playability, durability, and eye appeal will stack up with any of the OEM’s. I cannot compare any of the irons you were looking at with the PXG’s, however I have played the TS3 and can tell you it is an outstanding cavity back iron. The top line is definitely thicker than the TS 1 im, but not clunky at all. The finish is also different being a more polished look than the TS1 im, which is a beautiful pearl chrome. I have the gap wedge in the TS1 im and it is definitely a blade but just beautiful to look at. Not to confuse you but you may consider the new TE+ which has recently been released. It is a cavity back design with a thinner top line similar to the TS1 im . I just bought a set of those and the finish is also identical to the TS 1 im. I haven’t shafted them up yet but golly the TE + is just gorgeous. I played the original TE for years and just loved them. Hope this information helps !

One of the great things about working with golf works is you could build one iron of each to test . Then make your decision of which to make the entire set. Or you could be like me and have a set of just about everything

BillyP, Thanks for your post. Very helpful. Curious about your experience with distance for these clubs. Doesn’t appear they are like many of the hollow body irons out there now, made with a HOT face to promote ball speed. Would you say the Maltby TS3 is thumbs up on forgiveness but won’t produce much ball speed or distance? As a forged club, I’m just expecting it’s not as HOT as other OEM clubs now out there. Of course, I could always reduce the loft to get more distance I suppose but the Maltby lofts are fairly weak to start with compared to most current hollow bodies.

Personally I find the TS3 to have great feel , very forgiving and long enough. I can’t compare to any OEM’s distance wise but can only assume they are comparable considering similar loft. I have hit the TS1 im gap wedge and it definitely has some pop and a unique feel . I have only hit the TE+ 6 iron a few times but it checks all the boxes so far. Hopefully Britt will chime in on this thread Monday. He can certainly offer great insight into what might be best for you.

Again, many thanks for the input! I’ll look forward to some insight from Britt as well. I’m thinking a blended set may be the best fit for me. Overall, I’m looking for a 4 or 5 thru 7 iron that is forgiving and enough distance so I can use the clubs off the tee on shortish par 4s, long approaches on par 5s and long par 3s (for me I consider as 165 yd and up since I hit my current PXG 7 iron 160-165 – which is an admittedly strong lofted 28 deg). I get distance and forgiveness from the PXGs but I’d like more of a players look than the PXG 0211s, and less offset – while maintaining distance and forgiveness of course LOL. 8 iron thru W, I’m looking for more workability, accuracy and consistency. I’m visually drawn to new TE+ over the TS3 (overall lines) from what I can tell from photo and posts on GolfWRX as well as the super high MPF rating. To maintain distances, I’m figuring I’ll need to reduce the loft a degree or 2 on either TE+ or TS3. Really appreciate all the feedback!
