These are often two talked about categories of irons that I find a bit confusing. Obviously the construction is VERY different, but I’m curious about the why behind the designs.

If you were to take a TS1 vs the PTM or TS3 in the same club, what would the theoretical difference be?

Would the TS1 be “hotter” because it’s hollow and provides more rebound or is it more about forgiveness on off center hits? I play a blended set of TS1/TS2 and just don’t really like the TS2. My idea was to get a little more forgivenss in the 5/6 irons. Maybe it’s the offset I don’t like? Just trying to see if the TS3 would be a good replacement or if I should just buy the TS1 5/6.

The TS3 has a slightly higher MPF than the TS2 or TS1, but all are within 80 points of each other, so you probably would not notice any playability (forgiveness) difference. The TS3 is the the highest at 786, the TS2 is 727 and the TS1 is 711. All of these are in the Super Game Improvement category. The TS2 does have the most offset, slightly more than the TS3. Not a lot more, but probably noticeable. The TS3’s have less loft than the TS2’s, but are still slightly stronger than the TS1’s. So you would just need to pay attention to the gapping. So the differences in the TS1, PTM and TS3 would be the cosmetic, the lofts and the offsets. Also there are differences in construction and materials that can make a difference in how they feel or react for any particular player. From a stability standpoint, they are all similar. Still, the look, lofts and offset variance can make a difference as to how they might perform for you. No reason to think the TS3 would not give you slightly more forgiveness. It does have a slightly higher MPF and has a wider sole which might be beneficial as well.

How about with regard to “hotter” face. In my head I’ve always thought the reason designers build irons like woods (TS1, P790, etc) was for more rebound off the face but maybe that’s not true. Will a perfect strike on the TS1 go further than TS3 due to the construction assuming same loft / headspeed?
The face thickness and construction of the TS1 can contribute fractionally to ball speed, but loft variations will have the major overriding affect on launch, spin and distance. If all else is equal, could you see a very small increase in ball speed from a design like the TS1? You might, but in our experience and testing it is fractional and not on every player. To me, the major benefit of the thin face and injected polymer construction is what it allows us to do in weight distribution and in the effect it has on the overall feel of the club. I would not choose a club if the sole reason was that it had a thin face in the hopes it would make me hit it farther. Again, the loft will have a much begger effect on that, as well as the length of the club, the overall weight, etc.
