Hi all,

I’m having a hard time deciding which model(s) of Maltby irons to try. I’m a pretty poor golfer — I took lessons and played a lot of short courses for a few years as a kid, but gave it up for about 30 years, until recently. For the last six months I’ve been getting out two or three times a week, for a combination of lessons, range time, and playing. I’m seeing improvement, but usually shooting around 100 at this point, primarily due to a combination of duffed shots and three puts.

I’m currently playing a set of Ping Eye2 irons that I bought used, but would like to get a new set, so I had a fitting recently. The fitter suggested Mizuno M15s, with Nippon Modus 105 stiff shafts, standard length, and 2 degrees upright (my Pings are also 2 degrees upright, but with +1/2″ or 1″ — can’t recall — regular graphite shafts).

I loved the way the M15s felt, and kept coming back to them. I was hitting them much straighter (typical miss is a slice, which the fitter partially attributed the improvement to the shorter shafts) and further (to be expected with the players distance irons, I guess). The fitter said the descent angle could have been a bit better, but apparently it wasn’t bad enough to be a dealbreaker (I think it was about 39 or 40 degrees). And the efficiency was the highest or second highest of all the clubs I tried. But, I’m hesitant to spend ~$2100 CAD at this point. Side note — I find it interesting that the MPF of my Pings is significantly higher than the M15s.

Anyway, I’m considering ordering some different Maltby 7 irons, prior to ordering a full set. Part of me wants to go with the TS3, as they’re reportedly very forgiving, and perhaps they would feel similar to the Mizuno due to being forged? And if I get to the point that I can shape shots, they seem well-suited to that. And another part of me thinks I should just go with the KE4 Max, as they are probably best suited to my current handicap, and they’re at a price point where if I do want to try other irons later, I wouldn’t balk about having bought twice. But it seems like the TS3.5 and TE+ are worth considering as well…

Sorry for such a long post — Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
