Recently ordered a TS3 7-iron that I’ve been reasonably happy with as a high handicapper. I noticed it is significantly longer than my old used 7-iron from Tommy Armour 845S Silver Scots (like 1-1.5 inches). Obviously lofts have changed, is the length increase just an industry shift or is it due to the loft playing as a longer iron? Both have graphite shafts (stock on the TA, Proj X Cypher 2.0 on the TS3). For reference my TA 7-iron loft is 35 degrees while the TS3 is 32, not a huge difference.

I’ve been striping my long irons in the TA set and I want to build a utility/driving iron from a KE4 since I hate my woods and hybrids. I want to go with the 4-iron and a KBS MAX graphite shaft. Should I opt for a shorter length for the forgiveness and to be more in line with my current iron set? I’m average height, 5’9″, WTF 34″. TIA

Our standard finished club length for a #4 iron with a graphite shaft is 39″ You do not measure from top of the ferrule. You measure from the ground line when the club is in the playing position to the top edge of the grip cap. The link below will take you to a chart showing how club lengths are measured.

Standard iron lengths have become a little longer, but not 1-1.5″. Our current “standard” length for a 7 iron with steel shafts is 37″ and 37.5″ with graphite shafts. Some companies standards with graphite are 1/2″ longer than with steel, others are not. I always advise to go wit the length that fits you, that you hit the most consistently, no matter what the shaft material is. As far as the lofts, 35 vs 32 is a lot. That’s basically a full club. Lofts have progressed a lot stronger than they were when the TA 845S irons came out.

As far as the 4 iron utility driving iron, go with the length that you believe best fits you and allows you to hit the most consistent shots. Shorter clubs are generally easier to hit for most players. Your height and wrist to floor really can’t tell us what the best length is for you. Without seeing you in person and going through a proper length fitting, you should work off of the length of 7 iron you have that you like and progress it from their. 1/2″ increments is the norm. The Utility 4 is in the standard weight range for 4 irons, so making it a standard 4 iron length, or to the proper 4 iron length progressed from your 7 iron should work. No need to account for a different head weight in the Utility Iron vs a standard 4 iron in a set.

Thanks for the in depth answer, Britt. So if I ordered the 4 iron standard length graphite, it would be 39″? Is it measured from the top of the ferrule to the end of the grip or from the hosel opening? My TA irons are used so there is a chance the last owner had them cut down.
