Looking for some advice on new irons. After a long break, I’ve started golfing again this past year using my 20-plus-year-old RAM FX Oversize irons. Although I generally hit them okay, my ball flight is too high, costing me distance and causing issues in the wind. My current RAM irons are traditionally lofted with a 7-iron at 35 degrees. I hit it about 140 to 145 yards with a VERY high trajectory. As a sweeper/picker, I don’t deloft my irons much, which contributes to the high ball flight. I’m looking to get newer, more forgiving irons and bring my ball flight down.
I was initially considering the TS3s for my new irons. However, with a 32-degree 7-iron, I’m unsure if that would significantly lower my ball flight. Now, I’m also looking at the TS3.5s with a 29-degree 7-iron. As a sweeper, I’ve always played better with low bounce irons with thinner soles and a sharper leading edge. Hence, I should probably avoid pure game improvement irons like the STI2s or KE4s, which have wider soles and a bit more bounce.
I’d greatly appreciate your advice and any recommendations you might have on this
I just measured the sole of my current 7 iron and it’s .75” wide at the heel and .88” wide at the toe. Based on those numbers the STIs are not that far off.
