I am a newer golfer (but older person :) ).

I was gifted a nice set of clubs that include 1,3 woods and irons.

last year I played a round and rented clubs which included a hybrid. I had never hit one before and loved it (I don’t remember exactly which one).

I am struggling with my drivers and lower irons and feel that a hybrid would be a welcome addition. y issue is that I don’t know which one(s)…

I am considering a 3, 4, 5 or maybe a 7 wood.

is there one or a combination that makes sense if I am just starting? I’ve read maybe a 5 is easier to hit than a 4, but have no clue. Also, would it make sense to just get a regular flex and standard length?

Generally hybrids are great clubs to have in the bag and are easier for most to hit than the longer irons. Which one depends on the lofts of the longest irons you play and loft of the fairway wood you play. The reason is you want the lofts of the hybrid(s) to fill the distance gap between the fairway wood and the longest iron you play. That being said, the fact that you are a beginner and probably do not hit your distances consistently with the fairway wood or the longest iron, any hybrid would be a club that should be easier to hit than either. I will assume the # wood has probably 13-15 degrees of loft and the longest iron in your bag is probably a #3 iron or #4 iron, maybe even a #5 iron. If the set of irons is relatively new the #5 iron is probably 25-26 degrees, the #4 iron probably 22-23, and a #3 iron probably 20 degrees. First, if you have a #3 iron and even the #4 iron, replacing them with hybrids would be something I would consider.

Two ways to consider. Go with a #7 wood (20 deg.) and a #4 hybrid (23 degrees), or a #3 (20) and #4 (23) hybrid. Either set up will be easier to hit than long irons and should fill the distance gap you have between the #3 wood and the longest iron, which should be a #5 iron.

Thanks for the reply. The #4 is the lowest # iron I have in the bag, but was told I should stay away from using it (along with the #5). as a beginner.

Also, I have a horrible time hitting my woods (*including the #3).

I think maybe going the route of a 3 and a 4 might be best.

My only question is if the 5 iron is problematic, is having a 4 hybrid and a 6 iron going to cover me generally as a beginner? Is there anything a 5 hybrid give me that I might be missing if I don’t replace it with a 5 hybrid?

Also, can I effectively replace my 3 wood with the 3 hybrid? Mostly as a beginner?
So I have a hard time hitting a 3 wood as well. Went to a fitting and ended up getting a 5 wood playing the length of a 3 wood shaft and a 7 wood playing like a 5 wood. That worked perfect for me and really helped my confidence. Also I play a 4 hybrid than start my TS3 irons at a 5 iron. All of my woods and hybrid are the IST Pros with the Rapport Core Blue shaft. I really like them compared to my previous PXG set up.
