Can anyone give context to the differences in feel/flex between the FST 90 shaft cut at A vs. R flex? I’m a regular flex, lightweight steel player but I don’t like a whippy shaft and I’ve never played a steel shaft in A. I’m hoping to use this for an FDI 3 iron head and I like the Apollo Acculite 85 shafts in R that I have in my 5 and 6 iron TE+. Debating just buying another of those in R as well, but curious what the A flex adds if anything.
First, I would say that if you like the Apollo 85 R flex in the 5 and 6, it would make sense to try it in the FDI 3. The FST are good shafts and generally they play a little softer per flex. In comparing the profiles of the Apollo 85 to the FST 90, they are similar. If anything, the FST is slightly firmer in the but section but they are very similar in the mid and tip sections. Deflection number is basically the same.
If you wanting more flex, and it doesn’t really sound like you do, then the A flex FST should be more flexible than the Apollo 85 R or the FST R. I would say again since you like the Apollo 85, why not just go with it. If you did just want to try something different, the FST R flex would be the closest.
