Britt,

Hope you had a great 4th weekend. I’m looking at ordering a set of TS3 irons in the very near future if all works out. I’ve pretty much decided on a 6-P with a 48, 54, 60 wedge setup along with a 7 wood and 9 wood.

My main question is how does the TS3 gap wedge compare to the DRT-G 48° wedge? The gap would be the shortest club I will full swing consistently and use for bump and runs around the greens. I’m just guessing that the TS3 will be a little more forgiving and the DRT a little more workable?

Qusetion 2. I was fitted recently for the Fujikura pro 95i shaft and would like to run it on all my wedges for consistency. How do you feel about the 8i spinner setup for wedges where the shaft that is a flex stronger is tip trimmed for an 8i and butt trimmed for wedge length. Or would it be better to just stick with recommended wedge trim lengths since it’s available?

Lastly, with the Pro Series+ shafts back in stock, how do they compare to the Fujikura Pro iron shaft? R flex and S flex as I’m right on the line between the two.

For those wondering about the wood setup. I already own a Ping G425 5 wood turned down to a 4 wood with a 3 wood shaft in it. That covers everything I need from about 230 to 250 depending on how I have the head set and how hard I swing it. I hit two different 7 woods that were going 205-215 so I’m figuring that the 9 wood should cover that 185-190 range. I don’t swing hard because I drop a lot of control when I do.

I know it was for Britt, but I play ts3 5-gw. I started with a non matching Maltby gw, but then decided to get the matching gapper. I’ve settled on the matching gw as for me it just seems to perform more like the ts3 irons on full shots, which is when I hit it the most, but also performs like a classic wedge on knock downs, and I even chip the bump and run with it from time to time. Just food for thought. It has the same buttery feel and hits awesome flighted shots. I know not everyone will order both, and I didn’t hate having the non matching gw, but it is an awesome club, just like the rest of the ts3’s.

Thanks for that. I always welcome real world experiences and other’s opinions. I am taking the TS3 7i test club to the course in about 30 minutes to put it through the paces. I tested it last night in the back yard off a mat and it felt great. If the set gap wedge has that same feeling, I will go with it for sure. I was pretty much leaning that way anyway. I appreciate the input.
I will say I really like my TS3 GW, use it probably more than the PW. I know there is minimal change except for loft but it just hits great more often than not.

TS3 GW vs the DRT 48. DRT has 1 degree (6 deg. vs 5 deg. for the TS3) more bounce and a very slightly narrower effective sole width (not really noticeable). Sole front to back radius is similar on both. DRT has a little more of a relief grind on the leading edge, but both have nice leading a nice leading and trailing edge radius. So, the biggest difference is the profile, or the look. DRT is more of a traditional stand alone wedge look and the TS3 GW looks like the TS3 profile. I don’t think you would notice much performance difference.

Putting an 8i shaft in a wedge will effectively make the shaft play softer since the head weight on the wedge head is heavier than the 8 iron. Some do this to get the softer feeling “spinner” type wedge shaft. I think most manufacturers that produce wedge specific shafts do use 8 iron blanks to produce them. I may be wrong on some, but know some do. It’s really personal preference on what you want it to feel like. You can do that or simply go to a softer flex and trim it for the wedge if you want the wedge shaft to feel softer. If you hit mainly full shots with the 48 degree wedge, I would think you would want it to swing like the PW and the other clubs in the set. In that case, I would go with the same flex and trim it for the GW.

The Fujikura Pro shafts profile is a little stiffer than the Pro Series +. The Fuji Pro R and S will play firmer than the MPF R and S will. the Fuji’s are on the firm side of the flex ratings. The MPF’s are right on the average for the flexes.

Thanks Britt. So basically it really just depends on if I want the Gap wedge to match the TS3 or to match the DRT. It’s good to know that they will play basically the same, especially at my level. I might just match the shafts on the Pitch and Gap and then play with the spinner shaft on the 54 and 60 to see how they play. I appreciate the fast response. Have a great week!
Basically yes, depends on if you want the Gap wedge to match TSE or the DRT. The specs and the sole are very similar so they should play similar. Just a different look.
