I went to Dicks this past weekend to hit the Maxfli XC2 and XC3 irons to help me narrow down my future Matlby purchase. Going in I was expecting to like XC2 more as it is supposed to be more like the TS3 which was the Maltby head I was favoring. Didn’t get along with the XC2, but I really liked the XC3 which is closer to the TS3.5.

As far as club head weight goes, how close are the XC3 and TS3.5’s? The display set of XC3’s had steel shafts and lightly swinging them, they felt very heavy. But the demo XC3 7 iron I was able to hit in the simulator had a graphite shaft and the weight felt very comfortable. I was intending on going with steel shafts on what ever Maltby irons I end up with, but this past weekends experience has my questioning that choice and wondering if graphite would be best. Provided that the XC3 and TS3.5 have similar head weights.

Stock head weights are identical. Could lighter weight steel, or the graphite as well. Lots of options either way. Graphite will absorb shock a little more than steel, if that is something that matters. Overall weight and feel that works for you is what your looking for. We built several graphite demo clubs for the stores, so not sure which one you hit. Could be the Recoil HDC or the or the Mitsubishi MMT. So the weights in those were either 70 R flex, or 80 R flex in the HDC and 70 R flex in the MMT. At least that is what we built them for demos. In steel, there were several options.

Might look at Nippon for a wide range of lightweight weight options in steel. The Recoil or MMT graphite options are good and if you hit them and liked them, that might be the way to go.

How the clubs ultimately feel depends on the weight of the components and the specs we build them to. Confident that a set of TS3.5’s built to your specs would not disappoint.

I will give my Dicks a call and see if they can tell me what graphite shafts were on those demo clubs. If not, I will have to make another trip to the store.
