I’m in the market for a low cost iron set and after a lot of research I’ve settled on Matbys, specifically TS3s or TS4s. I’m an 11 handicap, though I lose a lot of shots on and around the green. That’s to say I probably play my irons more like a high single digit handicap. I hit a 7i 170-180 yds depending on the loft with a club head speed ~90 mph.
While I’ve tested a range of irons and don’t have much issue getting the ball in the air with “player’s irons”, my bag currently has a set of highly forgiving cavity back Callaways that I’ve used for ~15 years. So, under most circumstances I wouldn’t make the jump all the way to a muscle backs, but with high MPF of the TS4s, they seems like a reasonable option. I certainly prefer their compact design of the TS4s over the TS3s but I’m don’t want to pick purely on aesthetics and end up being disappointing with my performance.
Unfortunately ordering a test iron of each is outside my budget, especially considering I plan to get a Pak and can’t take advantage of not ordering the test iron I’d already have. So with all that in mind, would you suggest the TS3s or TS4s? An additional insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Hello!
I have both and play both. The TS4 is a more traditional and mentally sophisticated club. The TS3 is a club I hit when I feel less confident on the course or my current form. You are capable of hitting both well. The MPF difference is so minimal it’s negligible.
If you can only get one set get the TS4. You will love them. And they will encourage you to continually improve while giving you the forgiveness you want. My 2c
