I have a set of irons that belonged to Ian Baker Finch, I bought them from another Pro in Sydney I was having lessons with. These Protege blades that are no good to me except I still like to use the Sandiron sometimes, I liked them 25 years ago and could hit the 4 iron 190ish. Anyway I’d like to know if the shafts are top quality picked for the balance weight and a matched set because they were going to a Professional golfer, I wonder if they would still be better quality than what I’d buy today even though there probably 30-40 years old ?

I am sure that Mr. Finch had the shafts weight sorted to tight tolerances, as did most of the pros at that time. Other than that, and possibly having them checked for frequency consistency, is about all the “special” things one could do to get more consistent shafts than off the rack. Todays shafts are much better off the rack than they were 30-40 years ago. The Tour Issue product that True Temper sells is weight sorted to tighter tolerances. If it were me, I would keep them as a conversation piece, but would not play them. Alloys, processes, manufacturing and in most cases tolerances of steel shaft models today are better than they were 30-40 years ago.
