I am looking to add a 4 iron to my set, I seem to have a gap between my 9 wood and 5 iron, and I found i am better to take a full swing then to try and layoff the longer club. I built this spring a set of Maltby St-i 5-SW and there isn’t a 4 iron available for the set. So the question is which is a better fit a STI OS 4 iron at 21.5 degrees with a lower MPF, or a KE4 S at 22 degrees with a higher MPF or something else.

A couple thing to keep in mind I replaced my 5 hybrid with the 5 iron so I am not looking to add a hybrid at this point. I started with 6 -SW and then added the 5 iron. I will be using a Score Shaft. I have been away from the game several years and as I am getting back into it, my iron play is getting better and more consistent. I hit the 5 iron between 185-195 or so, looking to fill in between 195 and 205, my 9 wood I can hit about 215 (assuming I hit them well which is a challenge. I am leaning towards the KE4 S because of the higher MPF. I will take my 60 degree wedge out of my bag, it is almost useless to me at this point.

Thoughts?

Of those options, I like the STiOS a little better. Here are some others you might consider.

Although it’s a more expensive option, the new TS-2 iron is a better match for your STi set. Offset, bounce and loft all fit in better than the others: 21, .140, and 3 – https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-ts-2-forged-iron-heads/p/ma0294/ Those who have already tried it have found that they’re getting about 1/2 club more distance with them. That might work especially well for you.

Another option I’d recommend is the MMB-17 – https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-mmb-17-forged-iron-heads/p/ma0226/ Again, better match on loft, offset and bounce: 21, .145, and 3.

The STi 5 Iron Specs are 24, .140, and 5. The difference in the MPF among these may not be as noticeable to better ball-strikers as you might think. (185-195 for a 5 iron tells me you’re no hacker!) Any of these 4 options will work well. Personal preference may make the difference for you.

Since a lot of people have viewed this post, I figured I would give a little update. Earlier in the year when I build my clubs, I built my son a set of clones, he was just starting out. Over the weekend his driver cracked (It was cheap). He played my driver pretty well, An Acer VX, it’s a pretty decent club. So he is going to keep that. So now I needed to add a driver to the mix as well. I placed my order yesterday and it’s supposed to arrive today, really fast.

So for the 4 iron I decided on the StiOS, with the Score Shaft. I really like the other options given but part of the reason I did go with them, I really don’t need the bug to start building a new set, I need to get more consistent with the clubs I have and the MMB-17 and TS-2 would just encourage the bug, they will have to wait.

For Driver I choose The Maltby STw driver, with the same 12 degree of loft I currently have, The shaft in club pak has a similar profile to the one I have in my Acer, so hopefully it will play as well. The club paks are really good deals if you price things out. I didn’t have them assemble it, but that is the fun of doing it this way.
