what would most average golfers benefit from either choice?
It’s not really about the material, but about the flex properties, the proper fit, and weight of the shaft that should drive the decision. There are many more options in graphite today, from a weight standpoint. Not too many steel wood shaft options period and especially not too many weight options. From a material standpoint, there obviously would be a feel difference because the two materials absorb shock differently. Beyond that, you should go with the shaft that provides the best feel, and ball flight characteristics for you. It doesn’t matter what the material is.
