Hi Britt,

I’m clear on most steel shafts being designed around a 1″ bottom of bore to ground line measurement and the impact on tip trimming based on the BBGL measurement for a given head. Am I correct in remembering that graphite shafts are not designed with this 1″ BBGL measurement and thus this additional step should not be incorporated for graphite shafts?

Also, are there steel shaft brands that do not follow the 1″ BBGL design practice and if so, how can we identify that?

True Temper always used the 1″ number and we still follow that. Most all irons will be 1″ – 1.25″, with the majority being closer to 1″. I can’t give you specific brand and model BBGL numbers. We don’t have that specific information. Jim mentioned that there were some Mizuno that were closer to the 1.25″, but others that were closer to the 1″. Again, it varies, but generally 1″ is the number. No difference when considering graphite shafts. I don’t know if the graphite shaft manufactures actually factor this in, but we assume they consider the same and test flex in heads with the same, so we we consider 1″ – 1.25″ for graphite as well. That is with irons. Hybrids can vary but generally speaking we us 1″. Fairway Woods can be anywhere from 1/2″ to 3/4″ and maybe more if they have adjustable hosels. Drivers are generally 1.25″ – 1.5″.
