Did you measure the inside length vs out side length of your grip? The prevalent grip cap size seems to be 1/8.
To trim or not trim. I don’t take an additional amount off for the grip cap, my thinking being I don’t put my hand on the grip cap when holding the club so it’s not really a factor. Different manufacturers use different methods to measure their clubs. You can find one make of iron vs another ,both described as a certain length, actually vary in length.
It’s really up to you. I don’t think 1/8 -1/4 variance would be detectable by 98% of golfers.
The important factor here is to get the progression of length exactly correct in a set of clubs.
Grips vary and so do the recommendations. 1/8″ is probably general amount IF you want to take the grip cap into account. Some grips will have caps that 1/4″ would be more accurate if you are measuring the appropriate place on the grip cap. Personally, I trim the shaft to the exact length and do not account for the grip cap. In short, it depends on the grip as to how much to account for, and personal preference.
