Can the DBM finish ‘split’ after being bent? Meaning no actual harm to the club. My understanding of how the DBM works, I first assumed a split means the head is now stuffed.

I have had the DBM irons since they first came out, I think 2013. But recently I needed to get the lie angles significantly flattened, some by up to 3.5deg. I know thats too much, but I gotta do what I need to do.

One of them has a split in the hozel right where the clamp goes. Its about 1 cm across and on the front – meaning exactly the most vulnerable spot for it get worse from hitting the ball. But I cant feel any difference, but I did hit a couple of dead shots with mishits, which I second guessed that the hosel is cracked but centred shots feel fine, so who knows.

as a follow up to my situation – I replaced the heads that cracked. A mate of mine is a genius with metals – he welded the 7 iron hosel where it was cracked and said that it would either break first hit, or it will never break.

So 4 years later – this 7 iron has been my goto driving range club, have hit it many thousands of times, often off mats. Still strong – looks a bit ugly though. So definitely can repair a cracked hosel, not recommended but if someone knows what they are doing its possible (and unlikely can get it done cheaper than a new head too)

The DBM finish is chemically implanted into the carbon steel (see link below). If you see a crease or even think it is a crack, the material is compromised. Bending with DBM is OK. We only recommend up to 2 degrees on the DBM irons, 1 degree on the M+Series wedges. The amount can change depending on the model, he materials, etc. so, I would say that the head should probably be replaced.

Not what I wanted to hear – haha. but i thought as much, just needed to be certain. Interesting that the 2 heads that cracked were only bent 2.5 deg. 6 other heads were bent 3.0-3.5 and are fine (might need to find my microscope?) . But I guess the reason for that is just simply “it depends”

Hopefully golf works can handpick me some nice replacements.

First of all, the DBM is really not a finish, but a process that is built throughout the material, so in that sense, the finish won’t crack, but the material can. As far as having a crack in the hosel, it is highly inadvisable to hit a club with any kind of crack in the hosel, IMHO. Hope this helps you. Michael
