Outside of ferrule length specified by club manufacturers, are there any rules-of-thumb for ferrule lengths for irons, drivers, fairway woods, etc…?

No rules of thumb on ferrule lengths. Generally I would say, for irons, 1/2″ length is the most popular and on wedges it’s 1/2 to 3/4″. Personal preference on what look the manufacture is trying to get. Also, when building your own clubs or re-shafting, what looks good to the user.
