Hi guys,

I need your help and knowledge.

I just bought a set of Ben Hogan Apex Plus (graphit shafts) for, I think, a very good price (55 €). The set is in good shape, except the 6. See photo in attachment.

I would like to renovate it as best I can. I made some search on the web and in the “Ralph Maltby’s bible”. But I didn’t find nothing. So, is the only way, is to sand it and after to polish it? Or is there another way to do the job?

And what tools and materials do I need?

Another question: do you know where is it possible to buy original Ben Hogan’s grips?

I am reasonably sure that the Hogan head in the picture is a forged head, that is chrome plated. You can’t “sand” away the damage without damaging the chrome. If you do try and grind away damage like in the picture and do not have the head re-chromed, it will rust. We can strip the chrome, grind and smooth the damaged area and then have the head re-chromed. Understand we may or may not be able to totally eliminate the damage and there is a chance more weight will be removed than the re-chrome will add back, so the head might be a few grams lighter when it is done. The repair and re-chrome service is $59.95 and can take 6-8 weeks. Even though the picture gives me a good view of the damage, we would need to see the head to give a complete and accurate estimate on what can be done. You might look in to trying to find a replacement for the iron. There are sources online that can locate replacement irons. Ironfinder.com is one that might be able to help if you want to try.

As far as original Hogan grips, the best chance would be to contact the current Ben Hogan company and see if they would sell you the current version of a Hogan grip. To the best of my knowledge, they are not available in the aftermarket.
