I recently had hard time installing a new Super Stroke putter grip. It was so stiff it wouldn’t slide over the grip tape, kept pushing it up in a wad. In frustration I ripped the tape off and slid the grip on the bare shaft. Easy job. Appears on good, won’t slip or twist. Leads me to question: Is the grip tape really necessary on these grips?
Grip tape is used to provide the lubrication when solvent is applied. You have to use a lot of solvent when installing Super Stroke grips. You can install with no tape by using air in a safe way. Can’t recommend installing without tape and the lubricant it provides, or by using air. I wouldn’t expect to see a successful outcome too often without using one of the two.
