Background: I am a high handicap 60 year old, Tall golfer (6 ft 6 in). I have been buying used clubs for a few years and adding extensions to help with my length. I have been to a few demo days where I have learned about swing weight and shaft flex.

In September, I was in Columbus and I stopped in the Pro Shop and Golf Works to get more info on a new set of irons. For my swing speed and skill, I was getting great results with the KE4 Max irons with the Kuro Kage shaft in Reg flex. I will be ordering them soon but plan to order them 1.5 inches long and 2 degrees upright.

I was also interested in replacing the steel shafts in some of my older wedges with graphite shafts and was wondering if I could get a description of the flex profile for the Graftech GT 65 and the Graftech Lite iron shafts. Since the Kuro Kage seems to be on the softer side of the Reg Flex range, how do the Graftech shafts compare? Would it be better to use the A flex in the Graftech to match the Kuro Kage. I am new to club assembly beyond extensions and grips and I am looking for an inexpensive shaft to experiment with.

One other question about the KE4 Max Irons. Since I am adding some length, is it advisable to replace the standard 8 gram weight with something lighter in the head to help offset the swing weight on the longer clubs? Is that the primary purpose of the adjustable weight?

Difficult to compare the Graftech Lite and Graftech GT65 iron profiles to the Kuro Kage since the Graftechs are combination flexes vs the discrete flex of the Kuro Kage. That being said, the A flex in the Graftechs would probably be more flexible, slightly, than the Kuro Kage. When trimmed for the R flex, the Graftechs might be a little firmer. So if your trying to match the Kuro Kage R flex in the irons, the Graftechs are probably not the best choice. My question is, if you like the Kuro Kage in the irons, why not use then in the wedges, if you’re trying to match what is in the irons? If you like the Kuro Kage shaft in the irons and simply are trying to match the feel in the wedges, my suggestion would be to stay with the same shaft.

On changing the weight in the Max irons to reduce the swing weight, you can and that is something the adjustable weight design makes possible. One thing to remember, when you make clubs longer, if the head weight is not changed, the shaft will play true to flex, even at the longer length. If you reduce the head weight to reduce the swing weight, the shaft will play firmer. One swing weight is 1/10th of a flex. So, if at 1.5″ over length the swing weight goes to D8 for example, and you reduce the head weight by 6 grams by putting a 2 gram weight in to replace the 8 gram, the shaft will play about a 1/3 of a flex firmer. Not a big deal, but that is the trade off.
