Hey all, got a burning question that I can’t seem to get a clear answer to in all my research. Been lurking for a bit on the forums for my answered and figured the best is to just ask!

I found some Maltby and bought some wedges last year. Absolutely fell IN LOVE with them. I now want to switch irons to a set. However I’m stuck on what I should do. I’m a 6’4”, 270lbs man with a high 20s handicap. My swing speed is on the slower side. I played Callaway Edge irons and just never felt satisfied with them. I’m looking into two options from Maltby.

Do I go for the KE4 max which seems to be the best all around for game improvement, forgiveness, and for someone that likes to hit it off the toe and a nasty left hook? Or the TS3 with its beautiful forged look that still handles forgiveness fairly well and ranks moderately close on the MPF scale?

I’m really just stuck between the two because I want to get better at the game and not have to switch irons again in 2-3 years. So would I “grow into” the TS3s but not be severely punished for not being the best ball striker, or is it best to swallow my pride (and want for a super slick looking club) and get the KE4 Maxs to get my game going in the right direction?

I was in the same boat as you a month ago, with roughly the same measurements (6’7″, 270lbs, high-handicap) and trying to decide between the KE4Max and TS3’s. I ended up going with the TS3’s and I have zero regrets. I wanted to get a new fitted set in tandem with working on my game (making some swing changes). I found their forgiveness to be great, but when I pure one, it’s the best feeling I’ve had playing golf. I went with the MPF Pro Series+ shafts for the set and with +2″ and swing weights specified (this is key if you need your clubs extended). Quinn on the customer success team really helped me out with the building of my set (A+ customer service). Feel free to DM me with any questions.

Really appreciate your feedback on this! Sounds like our situation is really similar, besides the 2″ extensions. I will likely only need 1″ ha!

My swing is not god-awful but it definitely needs the helps. The swings I do hit well, I hope for the amazing feeling you are talking about. I really think that the TS3 will be the clubs for me after reading your comments. I also spoke with quinn and after bringing up the TS3, he mentioned that they would be a very close runner up and I think I am confident enough to move forward with the TS3s.
However I am still pretty lost on the shaft aspect. With a swing speed of 75 on my 7 iron and 145-160yd distance on a pure hit, do you have any recommendations? how did you pick your shafts? Thanks again for all the help!

I was going to go with the TT Score shafts, but they are a single length that couldn’t be cut down to a +2″ Stiff flex, so I started looking at other options. My swing speed is borderline R/S flex, so I went with graphite MPF Pro Series+ iron shafts, which I really enjoy. I pick up some swing speed with the graphite being lighter, but they still have plenty of feel and control. I highly recommend them with the TS3’s. Great value for the money. I also built a driver, a fairway wood and a hybrid with the MPF Pro Series+ shafts and they deliver across all clubs.

The gentlemen that have given you their experience should give you great insight. I don’t think you can make a bad decision. Technically and purely based on what would produce the best results for you for where your game is now, the MAX might have the edge. That being said, as the gentlemen have expressed, the TS3 is awesome and provides great performance as well, with a pure forged feel that is superior to any super Game Improvement iron you could find, in my biased opinion. I think all you sacrifice with the TS3 is a little forgiveness on off center hits, but not much. The MAX is a little larger profile and that can give you confidence at address and that is worth considering.

Might be worth trying both in a #7 iron before committing to the entire set. I know it’s a little of an extra expense, but might help you decide and ultimately be more comfortable with your decision.

Wonderful, I really appreciate the feedback. I know the larger face would be a great help to my ball striking but the feel of getting a pure strike on the TS3 might just keep me coming back for more and really drive me to get my swing in line.

Could you help me with the selection on a shaft? a 75mph wing speed with my 7i sets me in the R flex category and i tend to have a higher ball launch angle already. I will likely go for a 7i-PW set so the Pak would not make sense for me and i dont see the TT Score or MPF graphite in the custom selection.

The TT Score in the steel or the MPF Pro Series + in the graphite would be shafts to consider. You can still get them by calling in and our staff can help you with the order. Alternatives in steel might be the Nippon NS Pro 950GH, or the FST90 which is another value priced shaft. In graphite, you could also look at the Rapport, which we developed with VA composites. We get a lot of positive feedback on it as well. TT Score and MPF can still be done, and you can’t go wrong with either, so if that is what you decide just call in and we can get them done.

I play KE4 Max and have appreciated their forgiveness on toe side misses. I have also appreciated their adjustable weights for experimenting with swing weight. After testing the new Maltby TS line, I chose the TS3 for my next set. The KE4 Max has been great for my score, but part of the fun of the game for me is the feel of a flushed iron shot. For that, nothing compares to the TS3. To play it as well as I played the KE4 Max will take a little extra concentration.

Regardless of the head you choose, go get fitted for the right shaft first.
