Happy to say I pulled the trigger on a fairly full set of Maltby clubs:
TC Pro – 3W, 5W, 7W (Rapport Blue 70G Stiff)
TC Pro IST – 5H (Rapport Blue 80G Stiff)
TE+ V4 – 5,6,7 (Rapport Blue 80G Stiff)
TS4 – 8,9,P,G (Rapport Blue 80G Stiff)
This is my first time building a set of clubs and I’d like to build this set to womens standard graphite lengths. I’ll keep this top section short and sweet and to the point, and provide the WHY down below if anyone is interested.
Do I need to make any special considerations for attempting to play these clubs at such a short length (42″ 3W, 36.5″ 7 iron). I’m less worried about swingweight as I enjoy light swingweight clubs (more on that below) and I can always play around with lighter grips or lead tape to dial them in.
I’m more worried about the shorter length making the stiff shafts play too stiff? I also see on GolfWRX people mention something about the shorter hosels in the iron heads making shafts play a tad stiffer. Should I be soft stepping them?
I’m 30 yrs old and 5’6 with a 32″ WTF. 7 iron SS is 85mph-90mph and driver SS is 100mph-105mph without trying to kill it. Was recently fit into T150’s or Apex Pro’s with stiff shafts.
Cheers!
ADDITIONAL DETAILS/WHY WOMENS LENGTH:
One of the reasons I went the component route, aside from value and a fun project, was to build some fairly custom specs that wouldn’t be available off the rack.
I currently game Wishon EQ1-NX w/ DG S300 and briefly had a set of Cobra Aerojet One Length w/ KBS Tour Lite 105g Regular last summer which never clicked with me.
Over the years while travelling/visiting friends and family I have gamed a lot of womens clubs (most male golfers I know are lefty, interestingly Canadian hockey players typically grow up playing lefty despite being right handed which leads them to golf lefty too). I have played Ping LE2, SIM 2 Max and RAMs from Walmart. I probably have 12-15 rounds under my belt over the least 3 seasons with womens clubs. The annoying thing is I always hit them noticeably better than my own clubs. Just this past week I was golfing with a friend and asked to try out her Callaway Mavrik irons with 45g project x shafts for some shots. The lofts are identical to my gamers. I was striking them so much better. I played a full par 5 and par 4 playing two balls, one with her clubs and one with mine. I played noticeably better with hers. I made better contact, hit straighter shots, had a small amount of distance gain, great height, and got to the green in better shape. This mirrors my experience with the other sets I’e played.
I don’t know if it’s the overall lightweight, the C2.5 swingweight, the length, the undersize grips or what, but something about lightweight womens golf clubs smooths out my swing and leads to extremely solid shots with good dispersion and no loss of distance. They just work for me.
This has been such an undeniable pattern that it’s become a joke amongst my friends.
The reason I wanted to go Maltby is because off the rack womens clubs I find to have too much offset and are typically cast which makes it harder to adjust lofts/lies. I want to try and lean into whatever about the womens clubs seems to work with me, while also having a good quality forged head.
Any advice on building my new clubs to roughly womens spec would be great!
Thanks Britt. Looking forward to getting these built.
