Hello, Britt,

My question is for the golfer who is an excellent ball-striker and very good player with swing speed in the 110-115 range. He has a smooth tempo, excellent lag, but gets a very high trajectory, especially with his irons. He’s using the TE forged irons (and really likes them) with the TTDGSL S300 shafts. Since club head design plays a greater role than shaft, and since the TTDGSL S300’s are a very low launching shaft, what kind of clubhead design would work best for this player to help bring down the ball flight? Michael,

It would be difficult to find another clubhead that would solve the problem. You can find designs with stronger lofts and the TE is a 27 degree 5 iron in a blade design. That is strong compared to what irons used to be, but not compared to some of the designs you see today. Our DBM and our KE4 Tour +irons are a degree stronger, so if he was inclined to change head designs, they might help a little. You could also simply strengthen the lofts of the TE by a degree, which can be done. That being said, you might also try another shaft. Even though the Dynamic Gold SL is designed to be a lower launching shaft, it is lighter weight, which can increase speed and thus increase trajectory. If he went with the Dynamic Gold, not the SL, the additional weight might help without really compromising the distance. He could also go to an X flex which could help. It may take a combination of strengthening the lofts slightly and going with a stronger flex (S400, X100) in a slightly heavier shaft. Thee are always tradeoffs and the heavier/stiffer shaft might not feel the same. Only he could tell you if the feel was an issue. Also, and this is where a teaching pro might need to get involved, he may need to alter his approach to get the ball down. I can say this because I fight the same thing. I went to the DM irons a couple of years ago, stayed with a low trajectory shaft (Project X Rifle in 6.0, which is a little stiffer than what I would normally play), and worked on ball position and not getting so steep in my approach to keep the ball down. Not easy to do, but now I don’t really fight keeping the ball down.
