looking for a better understanding of MPF and my issue is this, I have two sets of irons at this time Apex CF 16 and Steelhead XR both from 2016 I believe. The Steelheads have an MPF of 967 and the Apex MPF is 349 so it would be my understanding that these sets would play vastly different but for me they do not. Visually there is a slight difference in the top line and sole widths and about a quarter of an inch in blade length, the amount of offset is identical and the lofts are very close, so having said all that can someone please explain the huge difference in the ratings to me. thanks in advance, Confused

Thank you both for the responses, I will pay more attention to the side to side dispersion , but I have to tell you that the front to back dispersion actually favors the Apex….go figure

Great explanation from Rlafoone. The C-dimension difference is huge, really, and does (in my opinion, and as I look at the two irons) present a different look. The C-dim in combination with the large difference in vertical cg (.744 to .864 is a lot) is why the there is a big difference in the playability rating. The C-dim and the actual vertical cg are the key measurements in the MPF formula. Like Rlafoone stated, if you hit them both in the center of the face, you probably will not notice any difference in performance. On the mishits, if you really analyzed them, I bet you would notice a difference.

got on track man this afternoon with both 7 irons and you are correct the side to side dispersion very much does favor the Steelheads but i have to tell you that the Apex are rocket launchers and they do provide added distance on mishits so it is pick your poison and I will go with the Steelheads as my gamers as they give me the first cut as opposed to the heavy stuff or worse so thanks again
