Just got back into golf last year from a 17 year hiatus. Was fairly good back then and usually shot high 70’s to low 80’s. Today I’m 64 years old, 6’4″, 260 lbs. and still pretty strong. I used to carry the driver 300 easily but now its 250 and maybe a little more on a perfect hit.
Anyhow, all my older iron sets have Dynamic Gold S300 130 gram stiff shafts and I don’t believe these are working too well for me now and need something lighter with more kick. Hesitant to go to regular shafts as I have a quick tempo and shorter back swing, sort of like John Rahm (wish I could play like him LOL). I also don’t want a shaft that promotes low ball flight. I know the S300’s are a lower flight shaft although years back they worked great for me.
Anyhow, I’ve been looking around and there’s so many shafts out there. Way more than years back…too many really. I was contemplating graphite as I recently bought 3-4-5 Maltby KE4 TC Pro IST hybrids with stiff Rapport Core Blue shafts at +1″. I hit those pretty good so I was considering the same brand/model in iron shafts but not sure? Possibly a different choice in graphite?
I was also looking at KBS Tour Lite in stiff after doing some research. Likely going with Maltby TS3 heads and not reshafting older irons. I may also build a set of Maltby TS1 IM’s as well.
Overall, just want something lighter and with a little more kick and feel than the DG-S300’s. Thanks!
I’m not a fan of the KBS tour due to past experience with tips bending. KBS warranties the shafts for 1 year if that’s the route you want to go.
There are many other lighter weighted options out there; Nippon, True Temper Score, and FST.
If you have any arm, hand, or elbow pain you should be looking at graphite.
