I liked the looks of the heads right away, so I ordered the pitching wedge, 9 & 8 iron heads, ones that I happen to use most frequently as well as KBS Tour 105 regular shafts. The shafts were tipped as per the chart and butt trimmed to the standard playing length. I dry fitted them together and taped on a Golf Pride Tour Velvet midsize grip and put them on the swing weight machine. I was surprised at the outcome. The 8 iron came out as a C6, the 9 iron a C8 and the PW a D0. A pretty large discrepancy in my view for a purportedly top quality iron head. I play D2 irons, so the 8 iron requires 12 grams of weight which I think is a lot. The other 2 not so much but certainly more than I would have anticipated. Has anyone else experienced this with the new TS-1 heads? Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

Several factors affect swingweight, including club length, shaft weight and profile, and grip weight. Of course the clubhead weight may also be off from what it was designed to be. The TS-1 8 iron should be 273 grams, the 9, 280, and the PW, 287. Heads are usually marked with the weight on the wrapper. They may have been off by a few grams. In your case, the KBS Tour 105 Shafts in regular flex are 105 grams, a lightweight shaft that is about 20-25 grams lighter than the standard steel shaft by KBS or True Temper. This alone will make the swingweight much lighter. The midsize grip is 4 grams heavier than the standard and affects SW by about 1 point. Club length is a huge factor since for every 1/2 inch, swingweight is changed by 3 points. Typically, those who play lighter shafts also swing a lighter swingweight. 12 grams may seem like a lot, but it’s not that unusual to add a tip weight of that amount to achieve the desired swingweight. And again, in your case you have at least 2 factors contributing to the lighter swingweights. Hope this helps! Michael
