I cannot get lead tape nor rubber tungsten swingweight “dots” to stay on the sole of my Mizuno ST-Z driver head. Any experience or suggestions to remedy this problem? There is not enough flat area on the trailing edge of the head where the crown meets the sole to have an acceptable application area. Is there a swingweight product (tape, dots) that adheres better but not permanently that does not require drilling the head? For those unfamiliar, the ST-Z has one rear weight that is not interchangeable nor movable.

As shown in the photo you could put the tape over the rear weight, blue-higher launch. Or some on each side red- more heel toe forgiveness. Or right in the middle, yellow- neutral, bit higher launch. Or some in all three! The flight changes will be minimal, you might notice them, or not. Depends how much you put on. If it’s good quality lead tape , and the head is clean, it’ll hold. You’ll need to be sure it’s adhered, using a plastic blunt tool or similar to press it on firmly.

I put my lead tape in the yellow position shown in your picture and burnished it on like I normally would and it came off in the first round. The tungsten dots are even worse for adhesion. I’m pretty sure the surface was clean but I could check that. The picture is of an older version of the STZ I neglected to include that mine is the newest version which is the 220.

Judd, that’s odd. I’ve had lead tape on the bottom of metal woods many times. Never came off. Clean with acetone or 90% or higher alcohol?

Yep, the tape should stay put I agree. Maybe my tape is old. May get new tape and re-try.

Maybe wipe down where you’re sticking the tape to with alcohol? Could be just old tape that needs replaced as well.

When I’ve run into this problem in my club fitting work, I have used duct tape – yup, duct tape. I use the Gorilla brand. I put on the lead tape, then a piece of duct tape to go over all edges of the lead tape, basically taping the lead tape to the head. Works great, but be sure to include the weight of the duct tape when calculating the swingweight you want.
