I’ve got a line on a set of PX IO’s (which I really enjoyed hitting at a recent fitting) that have been pulled (relatively new) from a set of Ping i525’s. I can’t seem to find any information anywhere on the hosel depth of the Ping’s, and if these would be a good match for me with a set of TS-3’s. I know these are butt-trim only, so my understanding is that if the hosel-depth in the i525’s is longer than the TS-3’s, I’d effectively have shorter clubs than I’m hoping for. Sure, maybe only by 1/4″ or so (maybe?), but I like to play my shafts 1/4″ long, so this would make the find not worth my money.

Curious if anyone knows where I could find that info, or if that’s just not generally listed anywhere. Appreciate any help at all!

Add the thickness of the grip cap and you’ve got your equation.

Note that finding the “heel” may present a potential problem if it is rounded. To measure club length insert the shaft to depth within the hosel. Orient the club so that the sole is flat (like at address) and take a long straight edge (I use a 5 foot carpenter’s ruler) to measure the club length, adding the grip cap thickness.

I do my club-making — the weighting and gluing process — using an old (cut off) grip that matches the grips to be installed. Slide it over the butt end of the shaft. Tap it on firmly. Stick the shaft into a clean hosel, and take your ruler to measure the final club length.

I use tungsten powder, which you can get through The Golfworks, to get the swing weight precise. It helps to start with heads that are close to spec. Modern heads, like what you would get from The Golfworks, are usually pretty good.

If you are intending to reuse the shafts, the info you really want is the height above ground level of the bottom of the bore. Subtract the bore depth from the hosel length.

Brent could comment, but given the design of the I-525 (cut away) heel, I would be surprised if you don’t find that your shafts come up a tad short for Maltby club heads. There are various ways to get around that problem. Lots of variables to consider.

If shaft length is really that important to you, one thing you could do is to simply get another shaft for your longest iron, maybe even something with a little more kick. Some swap a 3 or 4 iron for more forgiving irons or hybrids. Even the best professionals do this. Swapping a shaft at that end of the set would not be much different in concept.

You might even consider swapping two clubs so that you have a spare shaft should one break.

I’m still very new at club-building (built out a 6-and 9-iron TS-3 with the Score LTs just to try the feel of them out), so please forgive my beginner’s questions – my understanding is that once I know the length of the shafts (I’ve got a query out to the seller on specific lengths of the irons currently), I’ll need to subtract the Bore Depth (in this case, 1.355″) from that length, and then add…bore-to-heel measurement (?) to get the final length? Lol – I think I just broke my brain. I just measured the 6 and 9 irons I have from heel to tip of hosel, and they seem to both be almost exactly 2″. If that’s true, would the equation be 2-1.355 = .645 + length of shaft = final length? I’m sure I’m missing something – grateful if you have the answer :) Thanks!
All this is ultimately moot, as the shafts seem to be at least 1/2″ short (seller sent me lengths), so I’ll skip this for the time being. Also, I found on GW’s TS-3 listing that the bore-to-ground measurement is .75″, which (unless I’ve grossly misunderstood) I would add to the length of the shaft and that would be the final length of the iron – which because the shafts are shorter than standard, wouldn’t be a good fit for me.
