Hi Jim:
I still have my first set of persimmon woods, made by Spalding.
I got them in either 1968 or 69, they were a year old at the time. When I worked for Golfsmith in 1977, I had them refinished in a different stain, and had fiberglass inserts replacing the original. Glass was the rage at the time.
For sentimental reasons, I’d like to have them refinished again and to make them look a bit classic, just for display purposes. Let me know if you can do this.
I’d like to refinish in the original mahogany stain. If graphite inserts are still available, I’d like to put those in, and then have screws in the face in the classic, diamond pattern. I always like the graphite inserts because of the swirl that often came about in the finishing process. I think Golf or Golf Digest magazine did a test in the ’70s that showed graphite was the hardest of inserts at the time, and gave more distance.
I’d also like to put a different shaft in — the classic Dynamic S. I won’t play these clubs, this would only be for display. These 3 woods were made in Spaldings Custom shop. For some reason the original customer ordered a 1, 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 woods.
Thanks for your help!
