This is a basic question, but I want to make sure I have it right. I have a 47 inch shaft to cut to length for a woman’s driver. The code for this shaft is W4/W12. If I read the chart correctly, I will only cut 3 inches off the tip end. I assume the first part of the code (W4) tells how much to take off the butt end and the second part (W12) is for the tip end. Am I correct?
Those two codes listed are for a shaft that can be either L flex or A flex. Depending on your desired flex , pick one of them. So for L flex use W4. Which is zero trim for driver. Once installed trim the butt end to the desired playing length.
When trimming parallel tip shafts (.370 irons and .335 woods) those codes are for tip trimming only. Then butt trimmed to playing length once the shaft is installed. Taper tip iron shafts (.355) are not tip trimmed , only butt trimmed to playing length.

What particular shaft do you have? Tip trim of 3” for a driver doesn’t sound right at all. Most driver tip trims are 0”. Once we know what exact shaft you have we can offer more advice.
