Why does the ball draw/hook when hit off the toe??
Basically it is due to a term called “gear effect”. The club face has a horizontal radius on it call “bulge”. The definition of Bulge is as follows:
Bulge: The curvature of the face of a wood or metal wood from heel to toe. Bulge aids in imparting corrective spin to shots hit on the toe or heel of the wood face.
When the ball is hit off the toe, the head will rotate, based on the force of contacting the ball, backwards. Due to the curvature or “bulge” on the face, this imparts spin in the opposite direction, causing the ball to hook. The greater the bulge, the more the ball will move. On old wooden drivers that had a 10″ bulge, the ball wold curve a lot. New drivers today, because they are so large, have much flatter faces with bulges around 12″ to 14″. This makes the ball curve less on those toe shots.
Hope this helps.
