I wanting to learn about swing weight and adapt my clubs according to my golf swing. How would I determine my swing weight?
Swing weight is totally determined by the weight of the clubs components and the length of the club. In it’s simplest terms, swing weight is a letter /number designation of the weight distribution of a golf club. Also, the measure of the balance of the golf club. To determine the swing weight that is right for you is dependent on the clubs you are playing and the “feel” you prefer when swinging them. I have always said I don’t care what the letter-number designation is as long as I (or the player I am fitting) can feel the club head through out the swing. I understand that may be difficult to understand, but it is the key, in my opinion. For someone that has no understanding of this, I would always hand them a really light swing weighted club and have them swing it, then follow it by handing them a really heavy swing weight club, and ask if they could tell the difference. Of course they could and from there we would move to more normal weighted clubs and tweak from there. I would not overthink this and understand, as I said before, swing weight is totally dependent on the weight of the components. We can manipulate them some to dial in the feel we want, but finding the right head, shaft, grip combination and the proper club length and lie angle are the first step. From there you will have a swing weight of the club and can begin with the “dialing in” of the swing weight, if necessary. One swingweight = 2 grams of weight on the head end of the club, 4 grams of weigh on the butt end of the club. Most folks can not feel a 1 swing weight change either way. Also I would suggest using impact labels on the club you are testing. Hit a few shots with a club of a known swing weight noting the impacts. Add some weight (with lead tape) and hit it again and see if the impacts improve. If you can find a balance of a good feel and a consistent impact, you have found weight that is right for you.
