Hello everyone!

I’m diving into club building and planning to put together a mixed set of TS3 and TS4 irons with Nippon 950GH Neo stiff shafts. I really like the shaft in my Mizuno 225s, but I struggle with my 4-iron (about 1 good shot out of 3). I also didn’t get along too well with the Mizuno Fli-Hi 4-iron utility with an 80g Hzrdus Black (D2 swing weight according to the spec sheet). With my current 225 setup, my 7-iron carry is around 160 yards, so I might not have the swing speed for a 4-iron. However, considering the forgiving TS3 head, I’m still thinking of keeping the 4-iron in the mix, using the same shaft line but in a lighter version (either the 750 or 850 Neo). I know many would suggest switching to a hybrid, but there’s something about the feel of a well-struck 4-iron that I can’t resist (plus the ego factor). I also play a 21-degree Apex UW (top of the bag: Driver, 3W, UW, 4-iron…), which I use for around 210 yards, so there’s a gap between 185-205 yards that I’d like to address.

I have a few questions:

  1. What would the swing weight be for a 7-iron with a TS3 head, a Nippon 950GH Neo stiff shaft, and a Lamkin Crossline Plus standard grip (53g) at a standard 37-inch length?
  2. Would it even be worth trying this lighter-shaft 4-iron setup for $120+ (for the head and two Neo shafts)?
  3. If I go ahead with it, which is the better choice: 750 (78g) or 850 (87g)?
  4. Should I add tip weight or lead tape to compensate for any lost swing weight, or would it be better to keep the lighter swing weight for (hopefully) an easier swing?
  5. I’m also open to any suggestions for clubs to cover the 185-205 yard range!

Learning about Maltby and Golfworks has been a game-changer for me. As the golf season ends here in PA, my ADHD brain is already buzzing with ideas for what I want to build and test next…even though it might all be irrelevant after a few duffs in the Spring!

Thank you in advance!
