Pxg just came out with the PXG 0311 ST Irons which is super smart idea with what they did a variable length blade longer in the long irons 3-5 and a little shorter as it goes up I seen them and I must say it is very confident inspiring especially the long irons which are harder to hit any way,,,I always wondered why the long irons looked shorter heel to toe and then the mid to short irons looked longer which is a little easier to hit or is it loft or something else or my eyes deceiving me lol or is that done by design, is there an advantage to variable length heads or keep them all the same lengths

Variable blade lengths are not new. I took a quick look at some of our designs in the last 20 years and we did the same thing back in 2002 with our Maltby Xtreme iron. We also designed one for Tommy Armour way back in 2003-2004. There are others, but the point being it’s been done before. It’s a good concept, as long as the mass and dimensional characteristics of the design put the cg in the proper place to enhance performance. You don’t see in on more traditional designs because generally and the loft increases and the head size gets larger (like in the shorter irons) if the you make the blade length too short, it looks odd. Generally on “players” designs the blade lengths generally are consistent through the set, with a very slightly increase in the shorter irons (.010″-.015″), which is not noticeable by most players.
