I understand there is no industry standard for stiff, regular and senior flex. I broke a shaft in my TS-1 7 iron and the local teaching pro/ golf club builder put in an Aerotech Volant FT series graphite shaft. It is 55 grams and an F2 senior flex. The vibration frequency is 270 with a D3 swing weight. It doesn’t seem whippy to me but maybe I am just old. I was wondering if that sounds like a senior flex. What is a “normal” or expected frequency for stiff, regular and senior. Do the Aerotech shafts run stiff or loose by flex designation. If I replaces my other irons with an Aerotech F3 would I notice a difference or stick with the F2 for the entire set.

Assuming the club is men’s standard length, or at least close to it, 270 cpm on a #7 iron is definitely a soft “senior” flex. On our frequency chart a 37″ iron with a frequency of 270 cpm’s is just above the L flex, so I would call it a soft A flex. If you hit it well, the feel is good, and it gives you the trajectory and distance you are looking for, I would advise staying with it. If you feel it is a little on the flexible side, the F3 would be the way to go.

Of course the 270 cpm measurement is at one point on the shaft, and an overall generalization of its flex. Any shaft will vary in frequency at different points along the shaft which, when measured, can provide the overall flex profile, which could indicate a soft tip, stiff tip, soft butt, stiff butt, etc. Granted this may be more important in an R,S or X shaft, but even a senior flex will have its own profile. At this point, Britt is right on, since you cannot measure the profile on your own, if it plays OK for you keep it. If you notice you do not like the swing of that club, then have a new shaft dropped in.
