Daniel,
I know this is directed at Britt, but I’m going to give my opinion as someone who’s played all but Maltby as well as several others, but has been researching Maltby for over a year now and is about to make several sets for myself, my dad, and others.
Takomo is a marketing company who happens to sell golf clubs. They’re haven’t really innovated at all with their clubs as they’re pretty much from a Chinese catalog with a few tweaks and their logo. You can see their irons from several other brands (Ram, Haywood, Caley, etc). I played the 101’s for 2+ years and wasn’t really impressed at all. Plus their customer service lacked in virtually every way, which is what I see all the time on the MGS forum and other reviews.
Sub70 is a great company and they make great clubs. I’ve played several irons as well as hybrids, fairways, wedges, and putters. As great as Maltby is on the CS-side, Sub70 is the best. I’ve spoken to Jason Hilland (CEO/Founder) multiple times about different things, as well as the leaders of various divisions within the company when investigating or the occasional issue. Never had an issue they couldn’t resolve to my satisfaction (or beyond it). Sub70 actually designs their own clubs, just like Maltby. They started out with a few catalog irons, but since then have designed all their stuff in-house. They assemble all of them to order in their Sycamore, IL location as well. No drop shipping from overseas like Takomo does. They even have a strong relationship with Tommy Armour III and have a few clubs designed by him in their lineup (irons, wedge, putter). They have relationships with several tour pros, including John Daly. I’d never hesitate to play their gear.
Maltby is a completely different beast, in a good way. Like Sub70, they design their own clubs. All of them. They also custom build every club to the customer’s specific requirements out of their Newark, OH facility. Or, they can send out the parts so the customer can build them on their own. Maltby doesn’t do any sponsorships. They don’t do social media posting or send out clubs for influencers to test and make videos about. They just make some of the best clubs in the business, at the lowest prices, with outstanding service and support. You’ll find social media and YT videos on their clubs, but mainly due to Maltby Nation actually sending their own clubs for them to test and video with. That’s how much their loved – people send their own personal clubs to influencers/testers to work with so they can get the word out. Maltby clubs have gotten better and better with each passing version. I’m not sure there’s a lineup out there that can match not only the looks but the value and the quality of club (both from manufacturing and actual play on course). I’m in the process of deciding what to build myself, and there are so many great options they’re making it difficult on me. But in a good way. Plus, Jim and Britt are awesome answering questions and giving advice based on proper details not sales pitches.
I hope this helps, at least a little.
Jason
