I have a fitting scheduled in a week and I was going to use that info to buy a set of Maltby’s. But the more I’ve read in these forums, the less helpful the fitting seems like it’d be when I would want to make sure I get fit into the right shaft.

My buddy did a fitting with the Cobra tour fitter and the shafts were a huge part of his new irons. So how would I know what shaft works for Maltby heads without a fitting? Do most people just guess based off their swing profile? Or is there info I can glean from a fitting that I could use to find a good shaft for my swing regardless of head?

My 2 cents. The TM P790 is a players distance iron head with stronger lofts than the TS4 and TS1-IM. So if you feel like you need the P790 loft structure I’d suggest you look at a couple of the other Maltby heads. Like the TS3.5 for example.
I built the TS3 for myself a while back but more recently blended the 3.5 into the set for 5 and 6 irons to get additional pop. Really like the improved performance those gave me at the top ends of my irons.
Whichever you choose just take your time and understand the loft structure you are trying to achieve. Stronger lofted irons can leave you with gaps as you move into the wedges. Just food for thought.

My main issue is I can’t stand the look of the TS3 or TE+. It’s just not for my personal taste. I know objectively that’s the one I probably should be playing.

My buddy got fit into Cobra King Tec players distance and I love how they sound and feel when I hit them. So that was why I was thinking the TS1-IM. His irons are pretty strong lofted as well though compared to the Maltby’s.

Why don’t you feed Golfworks with a bunch of your simulator data. Then see what they come up with.

Golfworks has a on-line fitting system. They also have shaft fitting software available.

Easily, they could build you one club to your specs. You could test the Maltby club against your gamer. See who wins out.

If you’re comparing to TaylorMade 790 I’d say that would compare to the TS1-IM. Players distance iron that’s injected.

bring your current clubs and make sure whatever they suggest is a improvement over your old clubs. Keep in mind there are instances where the fitter will not be able to improve what you currently have when you’re looking at numbers.

a good fitting should be based on bringing what you’re playing with you and the fitted club would be a better fit.

as far as where you start, you wouldn’t put a 75 year old man in TTX100 shafts and say let’s see how you hit these. There has to be a bit of assumption based on age, body condition, and feedback from the golfer about what they want from the new clubs.

I see. So if the fitter puts me into say a Taylormade P790 with a DG 105 stiff, would that translate over to how a Maltby would play because it’s more about me as a player? Or would that shaft and head combo be so different than a TS4 or TS1-IM that the fitting wouldn’t make a difference when it comes to what shaft works for me?
